We took our first family road trip last week, to Santa Barbara. Its a 6 hour drive, so yeah for driving at night! Both Peter and I were desperate for some warm weather so turning South seemed the obvious choice. Miss Blu behaved surprisingly well on the drive, granted she needed to be entertained the *entire* time, but there was relatively little fuss.
Our hotel was in Ventura, 20 min away from SB, because most of the rest were full. But we didn't mind, I got a great deal on hotwire and we are used to driving.
The beach was everything that we had hoped for! Beautiful warm sun and soft fine sand...
we stayed all afternoon. long, long, after my sun screen had worn off - somehow only the backs of my legs were burnt though....
Santa Barbara proper has one long main shopping street, but this includes such ritzy stores as Prada and Saks and most of the people around on the streets were wealthy older couples and masses of their barely adolescent teens....I peeked through the windows as we went by and felt young and poor.
The next day was cool, but I had had my fill of sun so we went out to the four seasons for breakfast.
This place was incredible....like a resort, from the Aston Martins parked out front to the posh lobby...I thought that if I stayed at a hotel like that I would never leave the grounds!

we had an incredible breakfast, and then made a trip to the Santa Barbara museum of art to see their Japnese wood block exhibit....then we needed to find a park so that Blu could swing.
The girl could swing for hours I swear.
We drove home the next day, Sunday, through most of the day but even though it was just a short trip it really felt relaxing to leave everything behind for a little while. I did take a big stack of school books, but we spent so much time going around and chasing after Blu [what is it about babies that they take off in the opposite direction than you want to go?] that they stayed in the bag most of the time.
